In 2006, Fuentes brothers (Vic & Mike) formed, what became, one of the most well known post hardcore bands of our generation, Pierce The Veil. Nearly 10 years later and these guys are selling out venue after venue and opening up for some of the biggest names within the scene; including, All Time Low & A Day To Remember. Now it was time for them to take the stage as the headlining act on their Misadventures Tour. On June 15 I caught the sold out NYC date at Irving Plaza; joining them for the ride were Movements and I The Mighty.
Opening up the night was the newest band of the three, Movements. Hailing out of California, these guys have turned enough heads to gather the attention of Fearless Records, thus landing them a record deal and the release of their debut EP. While they consider themselves post hardcore, for me, they fall more into the pop punk genre, therefore making them a bit of the odd man out on this tour. You can tell they were new to playing to sold out crowds but that’s something that improves over time and becoming more comfortable in front of the crowd. Their songs tended to blend together and they lacked a kind of original twang. However, give these guys some time to grow as musicians/individuals and the music will grow and develop with.
I The Mighty was one of the better known openers. Their musical style made a lot more sense on the tour with them falling more into the post hardcore/rock genre. They played a steady mixture of old and new work. The crowd response made it quite apparent that they were the favorite of the openers. ITM are the type of band that isn’t really into the “showmanship” of being on stage. They focus more on just playing their music to he best of their ability and the crowd was just fine with that.
Finally, it was time for Pierce The Veil. It comes as no surprise that PTV sold out Irving Plaza within hours. Which leads to a bigger question, why didn’t they choose a bigger venue? They could have easily sold out PlayStation Theater or Terminal 5, but more importantly, those venues have a larger stage. While the appeal for having a much more intimate show is understandable, Pierce The Veil has a huge stage presence and an incredible production that follows suit. Having such a high energy band crammed onto such a small stage felt very limiting. Regardless though, the night was absolutely insane.
With this tour baring the same name as their latest album, Misadventures, it seemed fitting that their set list consisted of the entirety of the album. This album shows such growth among the PTV boys. The breakdowns are much more developed and, unlike their other albums, I don’t want to skip through any of the songs. These guys have proven year after year why they are able to sell out so many venues and have been able to open for some equally incredible bands. 2016 is definitely going to be Pierce The Veil’s year.
Many left drenched in their sweat and the sweat of fellow PTV-fans, some left with their ears ringing but all of us left more hyped than when we entered and smiles too big for our faces. PTV puts on an unforgettable show that leaves us wanting more. We are left waiting on the edge of our seat for the next time they hit our city. Until that day comes, we’ll just have to rely on our memories to hold us over.
